Florida Opts Into Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit

Florida will join the new Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit program beginning January 1, 2027, giving taxpayers the ability to claim up to $1,700 per year in federal tax credits for contributions to scholarship-granting organizations that support K-12 educational expenses. The move, announced by Governor Ron DeSantis, is intended to expand school choice options for families by supplementing existing state scholarship programs, including private, charter, virtual, and homeschool options. Officials say the credit will work alongside Florida’s already robust school choice system, potentially helping parents cover costs for tuition, instructional materials, tutoring, and more.  Read More>>>

Don’t Let Your Plants Catch a Chill

Winter in Florida may be mild compared with northern states, but temperatures in the low 30s and even mid-30s can still threaten tender tropicals, young plants, and sensitive vegetables. Frost occurs when calm, clear nights allow temperatures near the ground to dip below freezing—even if the general forecast doesn’t show a hard freeze—especially in cooler microclimates around your yard.

To keep plants safe during chilly weather, consider simple protective steps:

Move potted plants — Containers cool faster than plants in the ground, so bring them inside or place them under a tree canopy or other sheltered spot when cold weather threatens.

Use covers appropriately — Drape frost cloths, old bed sheets, or other breathable fabrics over tender plants on cold nights. Use tomato cages or wooden stakes to support covers so they don’t touch leaves directly, which can transfer cold to the plant. Make sure covers extend all the way to the ground and secure them with clips or bricks to stay in place on windy evenings.

Focus on the most vulnerable — Newly planted or younger plants are more likely to be damaged by cold than established specimens. Prioritize protection for these first.

Once temperatures warm up again, be sure to remove protective covers during the day so plants don’t overheat. Gardening-friendly fabrics perform much better than plastic, which can harm plants if it touches foliage or traps moisture.
