The Florida House has taken a key step toward regulating massive data centers that support artificial intelligence and other high-capacity computing, advancing a bill from committee that would set new rules on electricity, water use and other impacts of large facilities. The measure (HB 1007) cleared the State Affairs Committee with a 24-1 vote, with sponsors saying the intent is not to stop development but to learn from problems in other states and protect utility customers and communities. The proposal now heads to additional committees as lawmakers balance technology growth with resource concerns; the broader “AI Bill of Rights” tied to the effort has yet to materialize. Before you pick out that new shrub or flowering vine for your yard, it’s worth checking whether it could become a harmful invasive species in Florida’s unique ecosystems. The University of Florida IFAS offers a free online tool — the Assessment of Non-Native Plants in Florida’s Natural Areas — that helps homeowners and gardeners see which plants are safe and which pose a risk of spreading into natural or agricultural areas. You can even submit a photo of a plant you’re unsure about to get science-based guidance before you plant.
